Ian is a partner in the employment & pensions team and is based in our Glasgow office. He heads up our Pensions and employee benefits practice. He is also a founder and director of McGrigors Pension Trustees Limited, McGrigors' independent pension scheme trustee company.
Expertise
Ian has many years experience of advising employers and trustees of occupational pension schemes on almost every kind of legal issue which can affect theme, from dealing with surpluses (many years ago) to how to eliminate pension deficits, particularly under the new regime introduced by the Pensions Act 2004.
Recent Successes:
- advising the trustees of the Motherwell Bridge pension scheme following the failure of the company
- advising independent trustee on access to Pension Protection Fund following insolvency of Curtis Fine Papers Ltd
- advising on the pensions aspects of the sale of the Eldridge Pope Ltd pub estate
- successfully advising a number of employers on the closure of their final salary pension schemes to benefit accrual
- advising on the restructuring and merger of pension schemes
- arranging the switch of benefit provision from final salary to career average benefits
- advising on transfers of pension rights from public to private sector
- Low and Bonar plc - ground breaking litigation in Scotland on effectiveness of documents equalising normal retirement ages
