Press Release 20 June 2007 Non Smoking Premises Unaware of Smoking Ban Clauses - Failure to comply can attract a fine of up to £1,000 With the smoking ban in England coming into force on 1st of July 2007, UK law firm McGrigors LLP is warning existing non-smoking office and leisure premises that they too have obligations under the new legislation. From 1st of July 2007 virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in England will become smoke free. Many work places, pubs, restaurants already operate non-smoking policies and mistakenly believe they are exempt from this new legislation. Suzanne Gill, partner at McGrigors commented: “Many office and leisure premises that are currently non-smoking are unaware of the obligations they face under the new legislation. They must prepare ahead of July 1 as failure to do so can result in a £1,000 fine. She added: “The regulations set out minimum requirements, premises may display their own signs provided they comply with the rules. At each entrance to Smoke Free premises, there must be at least one No Smoking sign displayed in a prominent position which must comply with Government guidelines” All signs must comply with the following guidelines:
