McGrigors expands energy team with Partner appointment in Edinburgh

Leading UK law firm McGrigors LLP has expanded its energy team with the appointment of Ian McCarlie as Partner. Ian will be joining the firm in early October. This is the second Partner appointment the firm has made this month. Based from the firm’s Edinburgh office, Ian’s appointment brings the number in the established energy team to 40 including 6 Partners.

Ian previously spent six years with DLA Piper and has extensive experience in the growing UK renewable energy sector. He has particular experience of working with wind-farm developers, operators and lenders. Ian has advised clients on the purchase of both wind farm development rights and operating assets and on project construction and financing.

Ian also has valuable downstream and upstream energy expertise having at the beginning of his career worked in private practice in Aberdeen (including a secondment to the Kerr McGee Corporation).

Ian is joined by Shannon Rousson who worked with him at DLA Piper as an Assistant. Shannon will be joining McGrigors as a Senior Solicitor after working at DLA Piper for two years in the Finance and Projects Group focusing on the energy (particularly marine renewables) _ and transport sectors.  Before joining DLA Piper, Shannon held the position of Legal Counsel, in the power legal department at Transcanada Pipelines Limited and she also worked as an attorney with McCarthy Tetrault in Calgary.

Ian is one of two Partners the firm has appointed this month. Kevin Jordan will be joining the Project Finance team in London from Berwin Leighton Paisner also in early October.

Bob Ruddiman, head of McGrigors energy team, commented: “Ian’s renewable and offshore energy expertise is vital for our expanding energy practice. We have seen work in the renewable energy field grow considerably recently and it is a key area for our practice. This is an important hire for us. It enables the firm to offer clients a fully integrated energy package. Our package goes from offshore reservoirs and wind farms right across the energy board to the consumer’s electricity socket.”

Commenting on Shannon Rousson’s appointment, Bob Ruddiman commented: “Shannon will bring with her a wealth of valuable experience in the UK, Scottish, Canadian and American power industries. She has worked on a wide range of energy deals on both sides of the Atlantic, which will be beneficial for our expanding practice.”

McGrigors energy team is recognised as one of the leading providers of legal services to integrated and independent energy and power companies. The team includes over 40 energy lawyers and has an established client portfolio in the power and gas sectors. The team’s experience and capability covers the entire oil and gas value chain in the UK and overseas. They gained significant experience working in the growing renewables sector, particularly with on and off shore wind farm developments in the UK and Europe, as well as in marine, biomass and nuclear.
