Press Release 01 May 2007 McGrigors tax litigation team goes from strength-to-strength with strong results, a new partner and industry recognition It has been a successful few weeks for the tax litigation arm of UK law firm McGrigors LLP which has culminated with McGrigors being once-again shortlisted for ‘Best Tax Team in a Law Firm’ in the 2007 Taxation Awards, an award the McGrigors team won last year. This nomination reflects the high regard in which the McGrigors tax litigation team is held within the industry and the importance of the issues that their clients face. McGrigors continues to pride itself on resolving disputes before they reach the Courts or Tax Tribunals. McGrigors has also announced strong interim results for the half-year to March 2007 with turnover growing to £29.6 million, an increase of 23% over the same period last year. The success of the team and the strong results for the firm are reflected in new appointments and the promotion to the partnership for contentious tax specialist Rupert Shiers. Rupert advises corporates and high net-worth individuals on difficult HMRC enquiries and appeals to the tax tribunals and the Courts. He has a specialism in defending tax planning, particularly in cases HMRC argue that the planning is tax avoidance. He also advises clients on the impact of EU law on their UK tax position, including claims to HMRC or in the tax tribunals, references to the European Court of Justice, and EU-based claims in the English High Court. Rupert's entry into the partnership brings the number of partners in the tax litigation team to three. The team is part of the 40 strong Risk Advisory Solutions national business group based in London and headed up by James Bullock. Other recent appointments in this group include Maria Piggin, who joined in January from niche white collar crime firm Bark & Co to specialise in corporate crime matters. Partner and head of Risk Advisory Solutions, James Bullock, said: “These are great times for the tax litigation team. The team is bigger than ever, continuing to expand and working on some exciting, cutting edge issues, which has all led to the team once again being recognised by the industry in which we operate.”For further information please contact:
