McGrigors named National Law Firm of the Year

National law firm McGrigors has been awarded the title of National Law Firm of the Year at the renowned industry awards held by The Lawyer magazine.

The award, given to the Firm at an awards ceremony held in central London last night was handed to McGrigors for the Firm's ability to react to its client's changing needs through the downturn and its ability to capitalise on opportunities in the marketplace to benefit the business.

Some of the areas The Lawyer judges looked at in giving the award include:

  • McGrigors' merger with L'Estrange & Brett in Belfast which gave Northern Ireland its first full service law firm with UK coverage and gave McGrigors a market-leading presence in N Ireland;
  • McGrigors' strong growth in Manchester where it has focused on bringing new expertise to the marketplace by focusing on energy, infrastructure and tax disputes and investigations. The Firm recently announced the hire of a high-profile construction team from Hammonds for its Manchester office.
  • The addition of innovative new teams such as a Business Crime and Commercial Fraud team and non-lawyer tax dispute specialists to meet clients' needs through the downturn.
  • McGrigors' merger with boutique London litigation firm Reid Minty to boost its London litigation capabilities at a time when litigation work is increasing.
  • The formation of McGrigors' national cross-practice restructuring and recovery team with high profile lateral hires to support it in order to be able to offer clients the very best insolvency and restructuring advice at a time when they need it most;
  • McGrigors' role in the infrastructure marketplace where the Firm was involved in 20% of all PPP deals to close last year
  • McGrigors' broad expertise in all areas of the energy industry from oil & gas to newer areas such as renewables and waste to energy
  • McGrigors' efforts to use resource intelligently and the avoidance of redundancies to ensure that it retained the capacity that its clients need and that lawyers are available in the areas where they are needed.

Richard Masters, Managing Partner at McGrigors, said: "It has been a challenging year but we have achieved a great deal at McGrigors. We've been able to make the most of opportunities in the marketplace to develop our own business. But most importantly, we've reacted to the changing needs of our clients to ensure that the service we bring them is both relevant and one step ahead despite the economic uncertainty."
