Major Northern Ireland PPP deal helps shortlist McGrigors LLP for major award
The Energy and Infrastructure team at McGrigors LLP, one of the UK’s most dynamic law firms with an established practice in Belfast, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Manchester and London has been shortlisted for a major industry award in recognition of its work in Public Private Partnership (PPP) deals that has included advising on the first complete hospital in Northern Ireland to be privately financed.
The McGrigors Energy and Infrastructure team has been shortlisted in the competitive ‘Legal Adviser of the Year PPP’ category at the annual Infrastructure Journal awards in London (11 March), reflecting its success in advising on twelve of the 35 PPP deals closed in the UK last year.
Having merged with Northern Ireland’s pre-eminent commercial law firm, L’Estrange & Brett, landmark transactions during 2009 for the McGrigors team include closing the deal with the Western Health and Social Care Trust and Strategic Investment Board in Northern Ireland to deliver a new £270 million acute hospital for the south-west of the Province.
2009 also saw McGrigors LLP’s Belfast office act for Ulster Bank (as funders of an Amey/ Titanic Quarter Consortium) on a £44 million PPP project that will see the design, construction, financing and operation of new accommodation for Belfast Metropolitan College.
UK-wide, other notable PPP deals on which the McGrigors Energy and Infrastructure team have advised, include a PPP joint venture between Bilfinger Berger UK Limited / Northstone (NI) Limited / John Graham (Dromore) limited on a major road improvement programme for the M80 motorway in Scotland and acting for design and technology subcontractor Hasse on a ground breaking waste project in Manchester with a capital value of £640 million.
Commenting on the firm’s success in the competitive PPP market and being shortlisted for an award, Stuart Cairns, a Belfast-based director in McGrigors Energy and Infrastructure team said: “During what was a challenging year for the financial markets, McGrigors has been very busy securing and advising on over 33% of all PPP deals closed in the UK in 2009, including major capital projects in Northern Ireland.
“Whatever the outcome of Thursday’s awards ceremony, it is huge credit to the whole Energy and Infrastructure team at McGrigors that we have been shortlisted for a very prestigious industry award.”
The 9th Infrastructure Journal awards will be staged at the Natural History Museum in London on Thursday (11 March) with over 450 key industry leaders expected to attend.
