What We're Looking For

We are not looking for a type at McGrigors, we are looking for characteristics which demonstrate your potential.

Apart from the academic qualifications we demand of our applicants, you'll need to demonstrate significant talent across a wide range of skill areas. To help you decide whether you're the right type of person to succeed with us, take a look at the questions below.

Personal Effectiveness

  • How do you cope with pressure and what do you do to kick back? Finding a work/life balance is as great a talent in the business world as it is in all walks of life.

  • Can you think of a situation where you have persuaded others to change their attitude or views?

  • Where have you shown the energy and determination to start something and follow it through?

Commercial Awareness

  • Have you had a job where you gained real insight into the factors affecting a business?

  • Do you keep up to date with the business news by reading the quality press and watching/listening to the media?

Thinking skills

  • Do you tackle problems in a rational and logical manner? Are you able to see the key issues?

  • Have you had a job where you have been able to apply creativity and come up with ideas that are a bit out of the ordinary?

Selection Criteria

Overall, we look for people who have ability and enthusiasm and who are keen to get to know our business and that of our clients. As clients increasingly demand a wider 'professional services' outlook, our people need to be able to show more than just knowledge of the law. You must also be able to show that you are a team player, interested in continuous learning, and have strong technical skills.

In addition, we look for strong academic results throughout your formal education (as a guide 3 B's at A-level or equivalent). In Scotland we are looking for top level passes at both Standard Grade and Higher level and a realistic estimate of a 2:1 at degree level in both London and Scotland. We also take into account the strengths that individuals with interesting work history can bring. If you have already worked in a different field and are now retraining for a career in law, the McGrigors Scholarship could help you. As a winner of a McGrigors Scholarship you would benefit from financial support to help you through university and enjoy exciting career prospects for the future. Please read the McGrigors Scholarship section to find out more.

There is a space on the application form to tell us of any mitigating circumstances if you have not reached those levels and we do review the whole form for selection for an interview.
