I chose to apply to McGrigors because
the Firm offers the opportunity to work with top
global companies and institutions such as the Royal
Bank of Scotland and KPMG, whilst maintaining a
friendly and non-hierarchical working environment.
The summer vacation placements are
three weeks, and your time is divided between two
departments. For me they were IP & Commercial
and People Services.
During my placement in IP & Commercial
I sat in on client meetings and took notes, which
was great because it gave me a good insight into
how legal and business advice is combined and presented
to a client. I also got the opportunity to research
for clients i.e. writing a report on tax havens,
carrying out money laundering checks, telephoning
clients, writing memo's and carrying out trademark,
patent, and copyright checks.
In the People Services department
I also sat in on client meetings, I carried out
a lot of research and had the opportunity to recommend
amendments to a client's contract. In both departments
I sat in on internal meetings, one of which was
a video link up with the Glasgow office.
The vacation scheme at McGrigors
also involved a quiz evening, a duck tour around
London and drinks evening. Everyone, from partners
to trainees, took the time to get to know me throughout
my placement. I felt at ease asking questions and
found that everyone was more than willing to explain
and discuss any problems I had. It was easy to get
a feel for what working at McGrigors would be like.
I had previously worked in a smaller
law firm; I found McGrigors could offer more complex
and challenging cases, whilst maintaining the friendly
environment that I enjoyed so much in my previous
placement.
