Susannah Gray
Solicitor in Employment and Pensions, London

Susannah Gray

What did you study and where?
I studied Law with French at Glasgow University. Loath to relinquish my student status I followed up my degree with a LLM in Human Rights Law.

Why did you decide to join McGrigors?
It is one of the best and most highly respected law practices in Scotland, with a growing presence in London. It is also renowned for having a very laid-back and friendly environment in which to work.

What are you currently working on?
I am defending a wide range of tribunal claims and am working on a training session for one of our biggest clients which I will deliver to them in the new year. I also co-ordinate CSR activities in London and am currently helping to organise a team for Scotland's top endurance event, the Caledonian Challenge.

What three things makes a good trainee?

  • Enthusiasm
  • Thick skin
  • A good sense of humour

What has been your latest night in the office and why?
The night before my first ever tribunal appearance - I was determined to do the best job possible and must have read and re-read the tribunal bundle and my final submissions about 100 times.
Contrary to popular belief all-nighters are not common place and if you finish all your work at 5.30pm you are not expected to stick around to be seen working.

Finally, why should someone join McGrigors as a trainee?
McGrigors offers a very varied traineeship. Trainees have an opportunity to do a stint in any of the six McGrigors offices (London, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Belfast and the Falkland Islands). There are also possibilities to do secondments to KPMG, Royal Bank of Scotland and other blue chip companies. The atmosphere within the office is not stuffy and everyone is down to earth and approachable. Finally, trainees have an opportunity to work with individuals who are experts in their chosen specialist fields and to do work for the very prestigious clients which a firm like McGrigors attracts.
