Michael Watson
Partner, Banking Edinburgh Interview
Michael Watson

What did you study and where?
Economics and Accounting (Hons) at Edinburgh University and University of Pennsylvania and Law at Edinburgh University.

Where did you complete your traineeship?
Edinburgh and Brussels, McGrigors.

Why did you decide to join McGrigors?
It had a reputation (deservedly I now know) for being an unstuffy commercially effective law firm that gives you the opportunity to be exposed to challenging transactional work. It had then and still has in the key transactional markets a reputation for "punching above its weight" and for giving its trainees responsibility and rewarding its people on a merit basis not time served.

What are you currently working on?
In between trying to manage the Business Planning and year end processes in Banking, Projects and Procurement, the financing for a US company of the School Estate in the Highlands of Scotland, the financing for European Investment Bank of the Argyll and Bute Schools Project, aspects of the financing of a couple of powerstations, a couple of windfarm transactions, some property financings and around another eight PFI and project financings across the UK.

What other departments do you work with?
My fee earning practice is largely Banking and Finance orientated but that type of work requires you to work closely with other teams in the firm depending on the type of transaction that the Bank client is financing - in particular, Projects and Procurement, Real Estate, and Corporate.

What (three things) makes a good trainee?

  1. Making the effort to work in the team and get to know the team (fee earners and support staff)
  2. The confidence and openness to try new things and learn (a real intellectual curiosity)
  3. Having enough energy left over to play hard!

What is the best social you have been to?
The team Edinburgh Fringe night out of course, not that anyone can remember much about it!

Finally, why should someone join McGrigors as a trainee?
The firm punches above its weight in the UK giving its people the ability to gain exposure to and be challenged by meaningful transactions and gives trainees responsibility in a supportive, open, informal environment.
