Which
university did you attend/when?
I attended Glasgow University
for both my Honours Degree and my Diploma from 1992-1997.
Where did you complete
your Traineeship?
I completed my traineeship at Burness in Edinburgh
and stayed on as an assistant in the commercial
property department after qualifying.
Where was your NQ Position?
Shortly after qualifying at Burness I decided to
sit my English transfer exams to become dual qualified
in English and Scottish law. To build on this qualification,
I then decided that it would be beneficial to have
English experience in addition to the qualification
so I decided to move down to London. This is when
I joined McGrigors at about two years qualified.
The experience in the London office was really beneficial
to build on the qualifications that I had.
After two and a half years in London,
the firm was keen to set up an English Property
team in the Edinburgh office and I came back up
to help build this team. The team has now been in
operation for two years and is growing rapidly.
It had been very exciting to be part of the new
and growing team.
What is your current position,
tell us a bit about the road that led you here?
I am now an associate and am lucky to have exposure
to a very wide range of work. I am involved in property
development, property finance, project finance,
and renewable energy amongst other things so life
is never dull.
Three best pieces of advice been
give to you?
- Be yourself. Although you can
learn a lot from others, take on board what you
can but do not actually try and act like them
- Decide on what your aim is before
you start on the road to achieving it
- Don't wear navy blue and black
together as you will look like a bruise!
What keys skills have you
gained?
I have gained a lot of organisational skills through
work which definitely benefit your personal life
as well. I have also learnt a lot about mixing with
people and clients from very different backgrounds
(and who on some occasions, you may not like). The
most important skill however is communication. It
is so important in our day to day job (and life)
and it is amazing how much this develops.
