Some Words of Wisdom

An interview for any position can be a very daunting task: what to say, what to do, where to put your hands, how to dress ... You wouldn't be human if these fears didn't pass through your mind.

In this section we give you the chance to ease your mind about a few do's and don'ts during an interview, and some very valuable tips on how to conduct yourself.

Research, research, research! Knowing about the firm you are applying to will help you immensely during an interview and will make your interviewer realise you are willing to put in the time and effort to make a good impression. Try the internet, brochures, and newspapers.

Revise, revise, revise! Have a quick look back at your application form before you are interviewed. You'll have a lot of information in there including real life examples and specific roles which you may be asked about. Make sure the material is fresh in your mind.

Think, think, think! Try to anticipate what type of questions the interviewer may ask. Prepare some responses in advance and think of some questions you may want to ask at the end of the interview. It's OK to write these down on paper before the interview - that's not cheating! If you can think of something a little different, the interviewer may be pleasantly surprised, but beware of taking this too far. Don't ask random questions just to be different.

Be "yourself". You've probably heard this a million times, but it's true. There is no point lying on an application form or in an interview. You'll most likely be found out and even if you aren't, you'll just end up with a job that is unsuitable. We're not looking for a specific "type" at McGrigors, so just be yourself.

Be committed to this job! Know why you want a career in this field. Do you know what being a commercial lawyer really means? Do you have other significant experience that you'll bring to this role?

Smile! This naturally exudes confidence and belies the terror that you may actually be experiencing. So relax and grin a little.

ATQ - Answer The Question. If you don't understand the question, ask for clarification. Do NOT ramble, try to keep it concise and stick to the question.

Don't stall for time by repeating the question. If you need a moment, say " I need a moment to think about that one". This allows you to formulate an answer without an awkward silence.

Accept a drink (tea/coffee/water). It gives you something to do in the silences. Try to stop your hands from fiddling. Place them on your thighs or around your drink.
